it’s not often that one sees tollywood directors turning towards international literature for a script. but director sukanto roy seems to be an exception.
he is at present directing parokiya, a story he has scripted based on anton chekhov’s short story champagne. roy who had previously directed rabindranath tagore’s chelebela firmly believes that to make a popular film, a sound story is a prerequisite.
1x1 polls

"the story of champagne had attracted me from the very beginning and i had toyed with the idea of making it into a bengali film for quite some time. i am just happy that the dream is finally coming true," said roy.
his other film chelebela has just been released in various parts of the united kingdom. parokiya casts jishu sengupta, sreelekha mitra and new comer aparajita in the lead. the others in the cast are arindam sil, ranjit mullick and supposedly mousumi chatterjee.

although the first half of the shoot is complete in the tollygunge studios, the team of parokiya will soon be on its way to the forests of dhalbumgarj where the final shoots will take place.
talking about his lead role in the film, actor jishu said, "it is a wonderful character role that i am portraying and i am very happy that such an interesting lead role has been given to me."
playing a station master who is frustrated with life and doesn’t even bother about his young wife played by the talented sreelekha, the story takes a sudden twist as the main character gets attracted towards another woman played by aparajita.
talking about the film, roy said: "parokiya is not a commercial film, so it will only appeal to a certain class of people."
he also added that although there may be some songs included in the film but nothing as such has been decided yet. produced by atlantis films, the crew confirmed that they were following the story of champagne completely.
